A group of prominent organisations have joined forces to develop the TAIBOM (Trusted AI Bill of Materials) collaborative project, aimed at creating processes and mechanisms to ensure the transparency and trustworthiness of AI systems as they become increasingly prevalent in our daily lives.

The TAIBOM project was formally announced today at the TechWorks AI launch event at Bletchley Park, the home of the code breakers, UK. It brings together TechWorks, NquiringMinds, Copper Horse, BAE Systems, and BSI – leaders in technology, security, and standards development. The shared goal is to address the critical need for trust in AI by creating a framework that provides continuous assurance of AI systems’ technical construction and operation.

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning have the potential to transform our world, yet building trust in these powerful technologies is essential for widespread adoption,” said John Moor, COO TechWorks . “The TAIBOM project will help increase our confidence in these rapidly emerging, complex systems by delivering the processes and tools needed to evaluate their trust levels”

The project will explore the use of component versioning and attestations to increase transparency and comparability across AI systems. This will help address the complexity of modern AI, which goes far beyond a single algorithm or model, and encompasses a wide range of interacting software and parameter components.

By establishing a Trusted AI Bill of Materials, the TAIBOM collaboration aims to provide a clear and consistent way for organisations to demonstrate the trustworthiness of their AI systems, ultimately accelerating the safe and responsible deployment of these transformative technologies.

Nick Allott, CEO Nquiringminds: “Trust and transparency for AI is the issue for both governments and private companies. To build this trust we must use existing technology (e.g Software Bill or Materials), but innovate to address the inherent complexity of AI. This group of organisations has the technical ability and track record to create the impact needed in this sector.

David Rogers, CEO of Copper Horse said “All sectors of business are already using some form of AI, yet there are lots of ways to significantly undermine those systems – whether it be through dataset poisoning or by model manipulation. It’s just a question of time before these vulnerabilities manifest themselves in a big way. There is a very real need to be able to verifiably trust the components of AI systems and this project will solve a large piece in that jigsaw puzzle.”

In support of the Techwork’s hosted launch event:

Viscount Camrose, Minister for AI, said…

“AI is already transforming the way we work and improving lives through healthcare advances and better public services, but we can only continue to harness such advantages if we firmly grip the risks associated with its rapid development.

“The UK government is investing in equipping businesses with the guidance and support they need to use AI responsibly, but we’ve been clear that industry and civil society play their own crucial role in ensuring the future of AI is safe, trustworthy and beneficial.

“I am delighted that TechWorks is bringing together the brightest minds in industry to respond to the challenges posed by AI, building on the “Bletchley effect” and the foundations laid at the first AI Safety Summit in November. This new community is further proof of the UK’s position as a trailblazer in AI safety.”
