Introduction

The CEPEJ Working Group on Cyberjustice and Artificial Intelligence recently convened to assess progress in its ongoing initiatives aimed at integrating technology and AI into judicial processes. This meeting focused on reviewing advancements in key projects and exploring the practical application of AI tools in the judicial context.

Description

The CEPEJ Working Group on Cyberjustice and Artificial Intelligence convened on 17 and 18 October 2024 to review the implementation of its biennial Activity Programme. Significant advancements were made in developing a “Tech” Glossary, a “Practical guide on the use and development of video conferencing in judicial proceedings,” and “Draft Guidelines for the online publication of court decisions and access to legal knowledge,” all intended for presentation at the upcoming CEPEJ Plenary meeting in December.

The group engaged in discussions regarding the application of AI within the judicial context, which included a practical demonstration of automatic recording and transcription tools from Slovenia and Spain designed to assist judges. These AI systems will be incorporated into the Resource Centre on Cyberjustice and AI, which offers a comprehensive overview of the implementation of judicial AI systems across Europe and beyond.

Conclusion

The efforts of the CEPEJ Working Group underscore the transformative potential of technology and AI in enhancing judicial efficiency and accessibility. By developing comprehensive resources and guidelines, the group aims to facilitate the integration of these technologies into judicial systems, thereby improving the administration of justice across Europe and potentially setting a precedent for global practices.
