NquiringMinds highlighted in MOD SME Action Plan

The work addresses a core operational challenge: how to fuse information from multiple, heterogeneous sources and turn it into trusted, decision-relevant insight at speed.

In a maritime combat environment, those sources can include radar, satellite data, AIS, computing systems and human-generated information. The challenge is not simply ingesting more data, but understanding its provenance, trustworthiness, relationships and operational relevance as the situation changes.

The MOD case study describes NquiringMinds working with its higher-tier sponsor, BAE Systems, to develop advanced analytics for BAE Systems’ combat system in the marine domain. The aim is to augment the human decision process when a large amount of incoming information has to be processed. That information comes from multiple sources, or agents, including humans, computing devices and servers. The sources include radar, satellite data and the Automatic Identification System (AIS), the coastal tracking system used on ships.

NquiringMinds technology is designed to provide that integration and intelligence layer — combining secure data infrastructure, multi-source fusion and advanced analytics to support human decision-making in complex and contested environments.

This has applications well beyond a single maritime use case. The same capabilities can support multi-domain ISR, distributed sensing, command and control, targeting support, autonomous systems and the integration of new sensors and AI capabilities into existing defence architectures.

The MOD’s inclusion of NquiringMinds reflects the growing requirement for software-defined capabilities that can connect disparate systems, operate across organisational and technical boundaries, and deliver decision advantage without replacing the platforms and mission systems already in service.

For NquiringMinds, the focus remains on using secure AI and data technologies to help Defence make better use of the information, sensors and systems it already has — while providing an architecture that can evolve as new capabilities are introduced.
